Bowl Blanks and Bowl Stock Definition

Bowl blanks are sections of wood prepared specifically for turning bowls on a lathe. In the context of Old Growth Mill, bowl stock is typically cut from large-diameter logs where curvature, figure, and mass support stable turning material.

Old timber can make excellent bowl stock, but it behaves differently than younger wood. Density variation, internal stress, and moisture content must all be considered. Blanks are often left oversized so movement can be managed during drying and during rough turning.

Not every log produces suitable bowl material. Species, grain orientation, internal defects, and how the tree fell all influence whether bowl stock is practical. In storm-fallen timber, cracks and compression zones are evaluated carefully before committing to turning forms.

At OGM, bowl blanks are not presented as retail inventory. They are a material form discussed privately based on documented trees and intended use.
