What Is On There Now
Two pieces, and they are both the same job from two directions: getting a log onto the sawmill.
- Manually loading a log — four minutes of doing it with ramps, a rope and patience.
- Loading a log with a winch — the same problem handed to the winch instead.
That is the whole of it so far. I would rather say that plainly than let a page about videos imply there is a library behind it. Loading is not an accident of subject matter either. Getting a heavy log off the ground and onto a mill, without hurting anybody and without hurting the log, is most of the actual work — the sawing is the part that goes to plan.
What Is Not On There
Nothing from the swamp. No old growth, no storm damage, no tree being cut free, no numbered tree. The mill has not been moved out there yet, and until it is there is nothing honest to film.
That is deliberate rather than a gap I am apologising for. The record starts when the work starts. Footage shot to have something to post would be exactly the sort of thing this site is built to avoid.
What the First One Out There Will Be
Cutting a tree free from its root plate. Every one of those trees came down with the root ball still attached, which is the reason the heart never dried and the reason the timber is still worth having. It also means the tree is still tied to the ground, and nothing else can happen — no moving it, no measuring it properly, no opening it — until that cut is made.
It is the moment a fallen tree stops being part of the ground and becomes a log, so it is the right place for the record to begin.
What a Video Is Not
It is not a listing. Seeing a log on camera does not mean there is lumber, does not mean it is for sale, and does not mean it turned out well. A log can look right the whole way through a video and show stain, shake or a hollow heart on the first cut — and the filming stops long before that is known.
It is not a price list and it is not a storefront either. There is no "as seen in the video" here, because what was true on the day of filming can stop being true afterwards: a log opens and says something different, the condition changes, or the plan for it changes to suit what the wood will actually support. A video is a record of a day, not a promise about a board.
What a video does do is fix a moment to a particular tree, and that is worth something. When there is footage of a numbered tree it will be linked from that tree's post, so the film and the written record sit together and neither one has to be taken on trust. How the Video Fits the Record
A video is not the record. The blog post is — it starts with the tree where it lies and carries it through, and it holds the tree number and the coordinate together in one place. The tree map is the index into those posts. Film is just the part of it you can watch.
