Old Growth Mill (OGM) provides sawmill services focused on storm-fallen, old growth timber. Our work centers on converting downed trees into usable, rough-sawn material through deliberate, technically correct milling. OGM does not operate as a retail lumber supplier, and we do not resaw manufactured lumber.
Storm-Fallen Timber Milling
OGM mills timber made available by storm events, including Hurricane Helene. These logs are often large, irregular, and dense. Each log is evaluated individually to determine safe breakdown, practical yield, and the most appropriate end use for the material.
Our services support landowners, builders, and craftsmen who want usable lumber recovered from storm-damaged trees rather than removed as waste.
Log Breakdown and Primary Milling
Milling begins with controlled log breakdown. Depending on species, diameter, and internal condition, logs may first be opened into flitches or squared into cants. This staged approach supports predictable board production while managing the realities of very old timber.
From this point, boards, slabs, and structural pieces are sawn to target thicknesses based on the intended end use. All output is produced in a rough-sawn state.
Wide Board Capability
When suitable logs allow, OGM can produce true wide boards. Board width is determined by the material after opening and sizing, not by log handling claims or implied capacity ratings.
OGM is capable of producing boards up to 36 inches wide from suitable logs.
Rough-Sawn Output
All lumber produced at Old Growth Mill leaves the mill rough-sawn. Boards and timbers are cut to thickness, but are not surfaced, planed, or finished. This preserves full material dimension and allows customers to control drying, acclimation, and final sizing.
Requested lengths are cut with a practical trim allowance so customers can finish to final length after drying.
Quarter Sawn Milling (By Request)
Quarter sawn milling is available by request when log size, species, and condition allow. Quarter sawn is a cutting technique applied selectively, not a default production method. It is typically requested when dimensional stability and consistent grain orientation are priorities.
When appropriate, quarter sawn lumber is produced after initial breakdown into flitches or cants. All quarter sawn output is delivered in a rough-sawn condition only.
Bowl Blanks and Turning Stock
Usable smaller sections can be sawn into bowl blanks or other turning stock when material size and condition allow. Bowl blanks are intentionally cut thicker than standard boards and oriented for woodturning applications.
Availability depends on species, size, and internal condition. Turning stock is provided as rough material and is not presented as a retail product line.
Material Documentation
For select material, OGM can provide documentation associated with the original tree and its conversion into lumber. This recordkeeping supports provenance-minded buyers and project work where material history matters.
Current Scope
OGM focuses on primary milling and does not currently provide surfaced or finished lumber products. This allows us to concentrate on correct log breakdown, accurate sawing, and material integrity.
